Each day we accomplish our daily goals and get closer to building our dream boat -- The New York Sloop. We completed the loft of the profile of the boat, a major part in the construction of our boat. We finally finished trimming down the keel. It is now smooth and even, unlike at the beginning of class where it was slanted and rough. Finally, we cut the peices for the transom using the table saw. The transom is the flat part at the back of the boat. Today is only the end of a beautiful beginning.NY Sloophttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13726903351932776285noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-363250858376568576.post-68664493582566559512011-02-15T12:40:00.000-08:002011-02-17T20:36:35.093-08:00documentary kid- alex.c.pToday in class we were separated into two groups, one of which was working on the transom with brenden and the other is working on the keel of the boat, we learned alot of different ways to connect the wood together. For example, we used the butt joint, lap joint and biscuit joint. In brendan"s group they were actually creating some of the joint, today was was really cool because I went around and it was cool to see their serious, enthuastic, and working expressions. As the day continued it was really fun and we learned many things about the ships. Ray's group was making a part of the boat called the keel whcih is like the backbone of the boat. The class was interesting and fun and Im glad I was able to observe from a different perspective.NY Sloophttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13726903351932776285noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-363250858376568576.post-46232886367705180172011-01-24T10:50:00.001-08:002011-01-24T10:50:30.794-08:00

NY Sloophttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13726903351932776285noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-363250858376568576.post-83391179119674713662011-01-19T11:04:00.000-08:002011-01-19T11:04:03.762-08:00Roberto Maduro Blog ParagraphToday in class there were a plethora of positions that were given to students; one of which was joining the pieces for the skeg. Meanwhile other students gathered together to clean the up the room, while others finished up the keelson scarf joints. After they measured and drew out the scarf joints they cut down to the line every 1/4 inch and then used chisels to level out the rest of the joint.NY Sloophttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13726903351932776285noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-363250858376568576.post-44397155902314301792011-01-10T12:43:00.000-08:002011-01-11T05:14:55.463-08:00Hello my name is Arturo Navarrete. This update shows how my fellow classmates(marine technicians) are hard at work on their goal of accomplishing the unique New York Sloop. The following pictures also show technicians lofting the skeleton of the vessel and others finishing up the building platform where the sloop will be located. Last but not least another group carves UANYH on tools so that they wouldnt get mixed with other company tools. This has been the update on December 14, 2010 and we look forward for more followers and visitors to view our vessel with their own eyes(something unique)NY Sloophttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13726903351932776285noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-363250858376568576.post-78975921000745391702010-12-03T12:26:00.000-08:002010-12-03T12:26:56.647-08:00NY sloop blogMy name is Marc Melendez. i am one of the kids working on the ny sloop today i am the documenting what we did today we measured the cross members and layed them down. The point of the cross members is to make sure the floor is sterdy and the planks of wood we use for the stage do not bounce around to much we also aranged the tool cabinets we will try and post more pictures hope you keep following us through this projectNY Sloophttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13726903351932776285noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-363250858376568576.post-8520983260329768842010-11-29T12:51:00.000-08:002010-11-29T12:51:47.205-08:00New Job assignments SeniorsHello everyone my name is Dawshaun Thompson, and today in Vessel Enginering, the class was divided into three separate groups. One group worked on Fixing the Tool cabinet with the old tools, the Second Group worked on The newer Tool Cabinet. The last group worked on Framing and cutting wood for our final Designs of the New York Sloop. Everyone had something to do and I believe this new system of work will help us as a class and as Group members to move a little faster and neater.NY Sloophttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13726903351932776285noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-363250858376568576.post-75813878133200739462010-10-30T08:46:00.000-07:002010-10-30T08:46:37.866-07:00First Photos

Students are finishing scale models out of Bainbridge Board
This is a one masted vessel with two sails, a foresail and a jib. However, the students utilized plenty of materials to help them draw out and measure each part of their boats. Now that we have done a lot of things and learned the material needed to actually build the real boat, the class can get into smaller groups and work together. Each student will have a specific role and responsibility in their group to divide the work and effort needed in oder to accomplish their goal!NY Sloophttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13726903351932776285noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-363250858376568576.post-82214008960943328242010-10-18T11:48:00.000-07:002010-10-18T11:48:11.988-07:00Brendan told me to blogMy name is Cesar Im in grade 11 and i attend Urban Assembly New York Harbor School. My teacher Brendan teaches Marine Vessel Engineering class and right now we are sketching the NY Sloop. My boy Brendan said to tell you guys so now your told. Cant wait for you guys to see the real thing once we start cutting out with White Oak. Oh and Daniel another student said to say his name in this thing and that he learned the same thing.NY Sloophttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13726903351932776285noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-363250858376568576.post-4356990431671532682010-10-18T11:38:00.000-07:002010-10-18T11:38:42.251-07:00First Student Blog - Kiana HorneAs of today, 10\18\10, in Vessel Engineering and Design, we are constructing the NY Sloop. Different groups will be creating loftings of the profile view and the section views of the NY Sloop. Different tools being used to create these loftings are batten, a divider, a T square, and a yard stick. We will be using measurements from the NY sloop blueprints to construct a model twice the size of the original. We are working on our measuring skills and our problem solving skills.NY Sloophttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13726903351932776285noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-363250858376568576.post-33798440328860867082010-09-18T07:42:00.000-07:002010-09-18T07:42:43.806-07:001st PostHello, My name is Brendan Malone, I am a Marine Technology teacher at the Urban Assembly New York Harbor School on Governors Island, NY. As part of the Vessel Engineering class we are going to be building a traditional construction NY Sloop from the design in Howard I. Chapelle's American Small Sailing Craft. On this blog we will be periodically updating (every Thursday afternoon) our progress, posting pictures, student work etc. Dont have much more to say now. I look forward to reading your comments, suggestions and hopefully your encouragement. If you are interested in visiting us, send a meesage on the blog and I will contact you.
